Firearm Safety & Suicide Prevention

Firearm safety is suicide prevention.

In 2023, 71% of all firearm-related deaths in Colorado were suicides. This underscores the vital role of safe storage in preventing impulsive actions and saving lives.

Safe storage isn’t about restriction—it’s about protection and preparation. Just as we secure medications or wear seatbelts, locking up firearms helps safeguard the people we love.

At the Alliance for Suicide Prevention of Larimer County, we support firearm owners and families with free storage solutions and practical guidance to make safety a core part of responsible gun ownership.

Safe Storage Saves Lives

Secure firearm storage prevents unauthorized access and reduces the risk of tragedy—especially during high-stress periods.

🔒 Best Practices for Safe Storage:
✅ Store firearms locked & unloaded in a safe, lockbox, or gun cabinet.
✅ Keep ammunition stored separately from firearms.
✅ Use a cable or trigger lock for added security.
✅ Consider off-site storage if a household member is experiencing distress.
